1800 Health Science Technology Careers
Grades 11-12
Elective 1 credit

Prerequisite: Application required
This course is offered in an activity-rich learning block and is designed to foster an awareness of career possibilities in health care and to inform students of the educational options available for health science and health technology programs. Through an in-depth study of healthcare careers, students will experience over 50 hours of hands-on, clinical education at River’s Edge Hospital and Clinic, in nursing, rehabilitation, health informatics, lab and imaging and alternative medicine. Instruction includes beginning anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, medical ethics, diseases, and disorders. The course prepares students for the Medical Anatomy/Physiology course and/or for a variety of health technology programs.

Class meets three times per week (M, W, Th) at River’s Edge Hospital and Clinic in St. Peter.

**Due to the large number of students that are interested in the High-STEP Health Science Academy, we will split first year students into cohorts. Cohorts will alternate each week between Health Science Technology Careers and Medical Anatomy and Physiology.


1801 Medical Anatomy & Physiology
Grades 11-12
Elective 1 credit

Prerequisite: Application required
This course is designed to give students an in-depth understanding of the human body and its functions. Instruction includes intermediate anatomy & physiology, medical terminology, diseases and disorders, medical ethics and first aid. Anatomy in Clay methods and hands-on clinical experiences at River’s Edge Hospital & Clinic will supplement the course and lab work. The class is designed to prepare students for the Exercise Science/Sports Medicine, CNA, Pharmacy Technician and/or Advanced Health Science course and/or for a variety of health technology programs.
Class will meet two times per week (T, Th) currently at St. Peter High School.

1802 Nurse Assistant (CNA)
Grade 12 1 credit
Elective Articulation Agreement
Prerequisite: Health Science Technology Careers and Medical Anatomy and Physiology
An instructional program that prepares individuals to perform routine nursing-related services to patients in hospitals or long-term care facilities, under the training and supervision of a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse. This course will prepare students to take the Nursing Assistant Certification exam. Required labs and clinicals will be performed at designated training facility.

1803 Pharmacy Technician
Grade 12
Elective 1 credit

Prerequisite: Health Science Technology Careers and Medical Anatomy and Physiology
An instructional program that prepares individual to perform pharmacy-related services to patients in hospitals or retail locations, under the training and supervision of a licensed pharmacist. This course will prepare students to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification exam.

*This is a blended course (face-to-face instruction and online) and could potentially be completely online.

1804 Sports Medicine/Exercise Science
Grade 12
Elective 1 credit

Prerequisite: Health Science Technology Careers and Medical Anatomy and Physiology
This popular course is designed to teach students components of exercise science/sports medicine; including exploration of therapeutic careers, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, first aid, injury prevention principles, the healing process, rehabilitation techniques, therapeutic modalities, sport nutrition, sport psychology and performance enhancement philosophies. In addition to this ongoing classroom instruction, students will rotate through on-the-job training experiences with local physical therapists, chiropractors, athletic trainers, physical education instructors and recreational facility managers. This course will prepare students to take a Personal Training Certification exam.
Class will meet twice per week (T, Th) at Cornerstone Wellness and Chiropractic in St. Peter.

1805 Health Science Internship/Capstone
Grade 12
Elective 1 credit

Prerequisite: Health Science Technology Careers and Medical Anatomy and Physiology; Sports Medicine or Nursing Assistant or Pharmacy Technician
This course is for students who have decided to pursue a career in healthcare which requires a minimum of an associate’s degree. During an internship, students have the opportunity to apply formal classroom learning to actual career situations. Students explore a spectrum of career skills in a single occupation or area of emphasis. The internship will be supplemented with classroom instruction on critical workplace skills, including the job application process, legal and safety issues, ethics, goal setting, teamwork, conflict resolution, attitude, etc. Classroom instruction will be supported through blended, online instruction.
