Two (2) years of a world language are required for admittance to a state college or University in Minnesota. Many private colleges require 3 or more years of a World Language.


190 Spanish I
Grades 9-12
Elective 1 credit

Prerequisite: 9th graders enrolling in Spanish I must have a “B-” or better in their Communication classes or have the instructor’s permission. Students must be prepared to do a minimum of 20 minutes of daily homework or study outside of class.
This course is an introduction to the study of the Spanish language and the Hispanic culture. Emphasis is given to the development of basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Everyday vocabulary is stressed and basic structures of the Spanish language are presented. Various aspects of the Hispanic culture and lifestyles are studied.


191 Spanish II
Grades 9-12
Elective 1 credit

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Spanish I; should have maintained a “C-” or better in Spanish I and be prepared to do a minimum of 20 minutes of homework or daily study outside of class.
This course is a continuation of Spanish I. Students will review the basic structures and vocabulary previously covered and will be introduced to additional grammar concepts, vocabulary, and cultural materials. Emphasis on the four basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing is continued. The culmination of Spanish II is an optional spring trip to Mexico or Costa Rica.


192 Advanced Spanish III
Grades 10-12
Elective 1 credit

Prerequisite: Must have taken and passed Spanish II with a “C” or better.
Advanced Spanish III, the 3rd in a series of high school Spanish classes, is designed to further advance students’ skills in hearing, speaking, reading, and writing Spanish. The culmination of Advanced Spanish is an optional spring trip to Mexico or Costa Rica. In preparation, areas of study focus on the geography, history, and culture of Mexico (or Costa Rica). Conversation skills will also be stressed, focusing on each student’s ability to make himself/herself understood.


193 Advanced Spanish IV
Grades 11-12
Elective 1 credit

Prerequisite: Must have taken Spanish III and should have passed it with a “C” or better.
Advanced Spanish 4, the fourth in the series of high school Spanish classes, is designed to further advance students’ skills in hearing, speaking, reading, and writing Spanish. The culmination of Advanced Spanish 4 is an optional spring trip to Mexico or Costa Rica. Conversation skills will be stressed, focusing on each student’s ability to make himself/herself understood. Fourth-year students should have the skill and interest to do extensive independent work.
